The rural Dalit women experience violence and abuse both at home and outside. The whole family of four or more live in a single 10 x 8' and a 10x6' kitchen also used as a bedroom. The women generally cook and wash clothes outside. There is no inside running water in any Dalit home. They can't afford the plumbing.
70 percent of rural Dalit girls drop out of school by grade ten either to take care of a younger sibling or poverty drives many rural Dalits to marry them off to a near relative, which has resulted in many genetic related health issues in a number of families. They are unable to afford and access hospitalization.
Due to the lack of higher education and job skills in rural India, the only option open to Dalit women is hard labor on agriculture farms or construction sites where they are often exploited even sexually. The effects of chronic malnutrition and anemia (stunted height) are very obvious among Dalit women.
Rampant addiction to moonshine claims the life of many young husbands every year. This leaves behind devastated widows with young children.
